Whether you are an acclaimed skier or not, Steamboat Springs is a wonderful place to spend the winter months and there are so many activities to enjoy. Other than skiing and snowboarding at Steamboat Springs Ski Resort, visitors enjoy backcountry skiing and snowmobiling, cross-country skiing on 15 kilometers of groomed trails, snowshoeing, ice climbing, sleigh rides, helicopter tours, horseback rides in the snow, tubing, soaking in local hot springs, or even soaring high above in a hot air balloon. Downtown Steamboat also has great boutiques and outdoor gear stores, as well as exceptional restaurants and cafes.
The Steamboat Ski Area covers a 3,000 acreage area within the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest. It has a 3,668 foot vertical drop, 142 ski and snowboard trails, and an exciting snow park, home to the country's longest superpipe. The ski area encompasses five peaks, making a wide variety of runs for those who like groomers and open meadows, for those who like the steeps and bump runs, as well as for those who enjoy skiing fresh powder in the trees. Skiing is in no way a new activity to the Steamboat Springs area. In the late 1800s, locals used skis as a method of transportation each day. A great way to start your day off on the resort is by taking advantage of a free mountain tour, offered daily at 10:30am. They last about an hour and a half and welcome all level skiers and snowboarders to get to know the mountain a little better.
There is no lack of activities for the whole family. Kid's programs on the ski hill are well known and highly respected. Ski school classes are small so that kids can receive the individual attention they need to improve and have fun. Other annual events in the winter months include film and music festivals, US freestyle team Olympic trials, a winter carnival, various races, and Mavericks Superpipe Challenge.
